An Intensive Audio Workshop - August 20th 2011 in Toronto

This seminar will focus on the basics of subtractive synthesis and sound creation as well as a brief history of the synthesizer and an outlining of the positive and negative aspects of the most important synths on the market today. Essentially a crash course in "Synthesis 101," this seminar will leave the student with a good set of principals for both building a sound from scratch and dissecting an existing sound.

The seminar wi
ll begin with a brief history of the development of the synth, from the giant behemoths of the 1960s and 70s through to the monster sounds of the analog golden age synths, up to the early experiments of the digital age and the move into the computerized and VST driven era, along with quick notes on the positives and negatives of each phase of development.

The next section will begin the exploration of synth technique. Basic elements that will be covered will be Oscillators, Filters and Envelopes a basic knowledge of what each of these does will be very helpful although will not be essential.
The goal of this section is to give the user the tools to create some simple basses and leads in the style of classic sounds like the TB-303, the Minimoog and the more complex patches like the Hoover.

The second section will focus on oscillator sync, ring mod, sample and hold and the practical use of LFOs. Multiple modulation sources will be examined, along with creative use of the mod matrix and the basics of using FX.
The goal of this section will be to create some cutting edge sounds like dubstep and fidget house basses, wobbly leads and self-oscillating filter effects, etc.

Finally we will end off with a brief Q and A, in which people can raise questions or requests for specific sound design issues.

* The seminar will be taught using the D.Cam Synth Squad by FXpansion (a 30 day demo is available at FXpansion.com). Please note that the D.Cam Synth is not necessary for this seminar, but the user will get the most out of the lessons if they have a synthesizer with multiple modulation routings, such as Native Instruments Massive, Arturia's Arp 2600 or Moog Modular synth, etc.
